Tip of the Week - Jun 6, 2017 - June is Elder Abuse Awareness Month – Know the Signs

If your elderly parent, relative, or neighbor became the victim of physical, financial or emotional abuse, would you recognize the signs?  It’s estimated that there are more than a half million reports of elder abuse in this country every year, and this is a crime that is often under- or not- reported.

“It’s one of the worst types of abuse, because the elderly victims don’t often tell anyone about what’s happening, or they are unable to tell anyone what’s happening, either due to a physical or mental condition, or out of pure shame or embarrassment,” said CSLEA Foundation Chair Kenny Ehrman.  “It is up to all of us to know the signs and protect our very senior citizens.  Do not be afraid to report your suspicions.”

Signs of possible elder abuse:

  • Loss of weight
  • Change in behavior
  • Change in personality
  • Change in personal hygiene
  • Dirty clothing
  • Wandering without supervision
  • Appearances of under-or over- medicated
  • Unpaid bills
  • Change in spending habits
  • Bruises

“Elder abuse can be neglect, financial, physical, mental or sexual abuse,” said Ehrman.  “Our elderly deserve so much better.  Keep an eye out for the very seniors among us.”
